PSYCH AAYENE - The Release of New Age Tulu Album Song ft. Karthik Mulki & Christina George

Karthik Mulki has just released his most awaited electrifying New Age Tulu Album Song of the Year – “PSYCH AAYENE” on November 12, 2022. The title of the song, which in English literally translates to “I went crazy” has been penned, composed, and sung by Mr. Karthik Mulki himself, who is a hidden gem in the coast, hailing from a quaint town called Mulki, in the district of Mangalore. His journey of immense talent in music has begun right from his childhood, being trained in Hindustani Classical Music by Sri Mahabaleshwara Bhaagwat, and he has participated in the popular Kannada Television Show – “Yede Thumbi Haaduvenu” hosted by ETV Kannada Channel in the year 2007. “Psych Aayene” in his debut new age Tulu album song which features the super gorgeous Fashion Model and Runners Up of Miss Asia International India 2022, Christina George who has rendered her best performance conspicuously all throughout the music video.

Surely there has been a magical synergy of teamwork with a bunch of gifted youth from various streams coming together to work on getting the best music video possible. The music video has been directed by the talented and humble Mr. Avinash Bangera, along with a well-planned choreography that is apt and well put to bring out the fun, energetic and foot tapping beats of the song paired with a happy go lucky ambience. The man with the camera – Mr. Prajwal Suvarna, a core team member of JustRoll Films, who is already well known and widely appreciated in the coastalwood industry and has contributed to our previous projects is the DOP and Editor for Psych Aayene. He has brilliantly taken the entire video to the next level with his unmatched capabilities of creating a visually attractive masterpiece, which will surely drift you into a magical world.

We were able to have a short interview with Karthik Mulki, Christina George, Pallavi - the production manager and Avinash about their fun & challenging experiences and we are sure you will enjoy reading the story behind “Psych Aayene” from their perspectives respectively. Hello Karthik, starting with this interview, we would like you to share your experiences with our audience, even though we know summing it up in a few words would be a difficult task. Could you please give us your overall experience being the lyricist, composer, and singer of your debut new age Tulu Album “Psych Aayene” to our readers?

The birth of “Psych Aayene” was rather a strange one to me. To keep it short and simple – one day as I woke up from my sleep, I had this tune playing in my head – “la la la la la laa la la la la….” And as it was my usual habit, I immediately went to my recorder and recorded this tune, while I simply got these two random words “Psych Aayene” – I did not give it a serious thought, as I had thousands of these random tunes and words recorded previously. There was a desire in me to create a different song – that isn’t romantic, or classical or sad as usual, I wanted something unique this time, so I headed straight to my studio, started writing my song – I knew “Psych Aayene” must be the theme but the question was to make these words meaningful, what would drive one crazy? Some go crazy over bikes and cars, but yes, an obvious topic of interest would be going crazy over the looks of a woman. So, keeping a fashion model as my inspiration I continued to write my lyrics, I could easily write up to the intro and first stanza of the song and was quite satisfied with it, and decided to continue it further whenever I got some inspiration. I spoke to Prajwal Suvarna, the DOP of this song, my buddy, regarding this song, I conveyed that I was looking for a Producer to continue my lyrics and once we confirmed a Producer I wrote the second stanza with the help of my dear friend Pallavi, who is also the production manager of this song. While we were writing the lyrics we were also thinking of Arabic music, and accordingly we could finish up writing the entire song. We were stuck at looking for a fashion model and came across Christina George and confirmed that she was THE ONE who will just be perfectly fitting in the description of the model we were looking for this song, and we couldn’t think of anyone else apart from her. We have been so fortunate enough to have her joining our team. This is all about the song, and we began going ahead with planning the rest of it with our awesome team.

Thank you so much Karthik, it was great to know how the journey began, and the way you were able to come up with a new age album song, it is interesting. Yes, we strongly agree with you, Christina has been remarkable and the perfect one as you rightly said. Let’s see what is her perception about getting to be chosen as the lead actress of the song.

Hi Christina, you have captured several hearts through your appearance and unparalleled acting skills in this music video, we would like to know your overall experience working with the team. Have you ever acted in music videos before or is it your first time?

“Working with the team “Psych Aayene” was amazing. We just built up a family, a bond during those days of the shoot, we had so much fun. When I first got the offer, I was not really keen into it, as I do not have a dance background and was pretty much skeptical about being in a dance video, but then once I heard the song, I was so much in love with it and I decided – okay let me try this out. I was pretty nervous initially because I am not a dancer and people around me were dancers, but then I did have a great time, they taught me dance from the scratch and were very clear on what I had to do, and gradually things went great and we had an amazing output, and I am sure the effort the entire team has put in, it is going to be a very good one. I thank everyone who have been there, who have helped me, and I am waiting for the video to come out very good”.

Sir, you have been like an answered prayer to the entire team, when they have been frantically looking for a director, as the previous one dropped them. Could you please give us a brief introduction of yourself and how was your overall experience as a choreographer and director for “Psych Aayene”?

Hello all, I hail from a little town called Kaup, which is in Udupi District, and I attained my diploma in Mangalore. Although I had been keen on learning how to dance, I started to dance only during my 12th grade. My cousins and friends who are great dancers were my inspiration during those days. Mr. Prithvi Ambaar, who is one of the popular sandalwood actors encouraged me and motivated me to grow further. I haven’t attended any dance classes as such, I can say that I am a self-taught dancer influenced by television shows and YouTube videos. I stay at Udupi with my family. One thing I enjoyed during the shoot was it all worked out exactly as I had imagined. We had a limited time slot for our shoot at the venue and it was quite challenging to finish up all our shots as planned within the time limit. I am happy to say that it was all fabulously managed, and I cannot wait for the final video.

We have our Production manager here, who has a lot more to share with our readers as she has been with the song right from its inception till the final output and has been the backbone of the project in terms of allocating and optimally utilizing the available resources.

Hi Pallavi, it is wonderful to know that you have been nurturing this whole idea that came from Karthik Mulki, also have tried to put in your best efforts in making sure the project is well managed within the budget. Could you please give us your story behind the recently released New Age Tulu Album Song “Psych Aayene” to our readers?

Hi everyone, it is my pleasure to let you know about the journey of “Psych Aayene” – the New Age Tulu Album Song, composed and sung by one of the amazing music directors and singers Karthik Mulki. One day he called me right as he woke up from his sleep and told me that he had this song in his head – “Psych Aayene”, and when I asked him if he was serious or going crazy, he was able to convince me that he got this song in his dream, and this would be his next song. I did not give it much of a thought, but after a couple of days Karthik calls me to his studio, and I was amazed how he turned these two words “Psych Aayene” into an entire stunning masterpiece, and I was immediately confident that if he is ever going to release a debut, it would undoubtedly be – “Psych Aayene”. So, finally we had the song ready, but any dream remains a dream unless you get anyone to produce it and I would like to mention that we are heartily grateful to Mr. Jostin, JustRoll Films, for identifying and recognizing budding talents. It is so unfortunate these days that we see a lot of talented souls working very hard and struggling to make their dreams come true but they are not being recognized because they are not able to find the right producer, but Jostin sir is one such person who has been immensely encouraging, without compromising on anything, and a huge support system to the team all throughout the journey of the song “Psych Aayene” and we are ever grateful to him.

Our next step was looking for the perfect venue for filming the song, and it took about a month to decide on the same, not because we hadn’t found one, but because we were careful on budgeting and were looking for a fair deal. The hunt was not very easy, it was either the place or the budget that did not make the cut and we were almost at the verge of giving up the entire idea of filming this music video. Meanwhile, we looked up on the internet and found a place called “Barrels”. We called up the contact number and spoke to Mr. Siddharth Shetty and by God’s grace as a miracle, we were able to fix an appointment and met him. Being a proprietor of the venue, Mr. Siddharth was amazingly kind, sweet and supportive without expecting anything, but just one thing that his property stays undamaged during the process. He absolutely had no other demands, and this was such a kind gesture from Mr. Siddharth, and we are so grateful to him. He was also generous enough to offer us one of his cafés for our next location and it was all possible in one meeting! We couldn’t be happier!

We also had another challenging phase, in looking out for a suitable director for our song, as the previous one dropped us for personal reasons. Again, it was Mr. Siddharth who recommended us one of the most amazing directors Mr. Avinash Bangera, who also is a wonderful choreographer, and we all are extremely happy with his work! When we met Avinash he was immediately available to work, and while we were discussing the song, he already had his plans rolling and we all are much impressed with his style of work.

I would like to mention that this video has reached another level by the stunning and fantastic DOP by Mr. Prajwal Suvarna who has done justice to his work, I am sure the viewers of this music video would agree with me as it is so evident there. The duo – Director and DOP had a wonderful coordination and they have left no stone unturned. I would like to thank the entire crew – the assistant director and everyone who went the extra mile to put in their efforts to create this amazing video. Special thanks to VYOM Studio and Dazzle Studio for providing us with spectacular dancers, each, and every one of them have spared no effort in putting in their best moves for the song.

Heartfelt gratitude to the lead actress of this song Ms. Christina George. When Karthik had written this song, he knew she would be the perfect fit for the role, and she was so kind enough to accept our offer. She has done absolute justice to the song and has performed brilliantly all throughout the song. Karthik Mulki has rendered the complete package with his incredible lyrics, music composition and vocals rendering the right kind of feel beyond our expectations and I am very sure this is one of the best new age Tulu album songs that you all will listen to, and I have been so happy working with this team.

The entire team including the actors, director, assistant director, dancers, lighting, make up, designers, all had one motive – the success of this song and that was felt all the way right from the beginning till the end. Everyone has surely given their 200% and the entire credit goes to each member of our team. Thanks to everyone!

Apart from the above, I would also like to share some of the challenging experiences we had – One of our shooting sequences included a belly dancing shot, and we were looking for a warehouse or a similar kind of a set up for the purpose. We had looked for several places around but somehow it did not match our requirements. While we were on the hunt, I happened to see a spooky structure and recommended the same, but since it was a scary looking place, and it had a kind of a haunted look to it, it took me a while to convince Karthik that this was the perfect location. While we entered, the staircase, the interiors took us by surprise as it was gorgeous. We came to know that the place used to be a popular furniture outlet that was totally burnt. We are thankful to Mr. Sharath Shetty sir, the owner of the venue as we came to know that there was a new outlet now and though he was not sure initially how would the old and dark venue help us, he was generous enough to provide us the same for the shoot. Our viewers will be able to see that place in the song, the way it had been decorated and brought to life by our amazing decorators and made them a perfect venue for the shoot.

All in all, we had a totally fun experience, from hunting for a location, to getting a fantastic one, from not having a director to getting an amazing choreographer and director, from hunting for warehouses to getting a unique burnt-out place, it was all totally worth it!
